Boston University Upward Bound Math Science

A semester and summer program preparing first-generation, low-income students for STEM careers through hands-on work in research labs; a small stipend is available.

Who should apply

A great fit for low-income and first-generation-college-bound students from specific Boston-area schools/neighborhoods who want intensive, free math and science college-prep support.

Eligibility

  • Low-income and first-generation college-bound students (federal TRIO criteria)
  • Students from Boston Green Academy, Josiah Quincy Upper School, Chelsea High, or Charlestown High, or public-school students living in Chelsea, Dorchester, East Boston, Mattapan, or Roxbury

What you get

  • All services free, plus a small stipend for participation
  • Academically intensive six-week summer residential program
  • School-year support: tutoring, weekday classes, campus activities, vacation-week programming
  • Work in research labs with BU researchers
  • Continued support from program entry through high school graduation

Application tips

  • Confirm you meet the TRIO criteria (income and/or first-generation) and come from an eligible school or neighborhood.
  • Show genuine interest in math and science and a commitment to a postsecondary degree.
  • Because it's multi-year, convey you can commit through high school graduation.
