High School Apprenticeship Challenge

Massachusetts Life Sciences Center

A statewide program that funds paid life-sciences internships for underrepresented and low-income Massachusetts high school students by subsidizing intern wages at research institutions and small life-sciences companies.

Who should apply

Underrepresented or low-income Massachusetts high schoolers seeking a paid first research/biotech internship; works best when paired with a host lab or company.

Eligibility

Underrepresented and low-income high school students across Massachusetts. Works best when paired with a host lab or company (the host applies for the wage subsidy).

What you get

  • Paid internship (host reimbursed up to $4,080, based on $17/hour for six weeks full-time)
  • Optional pre-internship biotechnology and professional-skills training
  • Real lab or company research experience

What the application involves

  • Underrepresented or low-income status
  • Massachusetts high school student
  • Internship at an eligible host organization (the host applies for the wage subsidy)

Application tips

  • Identify a host lab or small life-sciences company early — MLSC reimburses the employer rather than placing students directly.
  • Consider the pre-internship training program to strengthen biotech and professional skills before applying.
